Froebel Pedagogy
Friedrich Froebel developed his educational concept in Thuringia at the beginning of the 19th Century. Despite the fact that this method of education is traditionally associated with Saalfeld-Rudolstadt County and has been implemented in schools around the world, it was up to that time still lacking in schools in Thuringia and Germany. Apart from the kindergarten educational methods and the trainings for kindergarten teachers, Froebel also wrote and implemented a lot of literature on school education.
Educational basis
The Froebel school in Rudolstadt is a private school. It follows the academic goals stipulated in the Education Act of the Free State of Thuringia, the curriculum and especially in the rules governing the elementary school. The educational objectives formulated here are the basis for our academic work. We update and modernize Friedrich Froebel’s educational principles and implement it in out lessons.
Timetable
Although the timetable is characterized by different methods and structures, it extensively meets the challenges to achieve the set goals. The school is a Full-Day School. This means that we have individual structured academic offers until 03:30pm and educational care and support for the children until 05:00pm on at least 3 days of the week. These services are voluntary but require permission from the parents.
Catchment area
With the parent’s permission and bearing in mind the capacity of the school (single class intake), the school admits students from the town and in and around the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt County.
Implementing the Froebel Pedagogy
Implementing a modern and adapted form of the Froebel pedagogy necessitates a holistic orientation to the methods and standards practiced by Froebel and defining a governing framework that was non-existent back then.
Important points we consider when implementing the Froebel pedagogy in our school:
- Lessons in epochs
- High rating of academic rituals
- Implementation of a Froebel-oriented concept
- Modern use of the Froebel term “Tataneignung” through self-actions and implementation of polytechnic thinking
- Use of the Froebel learning process from causative to practical lessons
- Partial targeted use of mixed age groups
- Parent involvement in the school process (also in lessons)
School fees: school fees are paid for lessons at the school. The fees are socially staggered for afternoon classes that are held during the Full-days.
Rating and evaluation of grades:
In a bid to enhance the development of each child, we at the Froebel school give all children (up to the third grade) a qualified verbal evaluation of their achievements and competencies. If the child is transferring from the Froebel school to other state-run or private schools we give the students holistic academic evaluations also stating the capabilities of the child. We do this in a way that makes it easy for the school taking on the child to easily integrate it into their system. From the 4th grade onwards we rate the grades of each child according to the standard rating system to enable smooth transfer to the new school.
